چکیده

We develop a self-mixing laser interferometer for the measurement of displacements on a generic target surface. The measurement is based on the bright-speckle tracking, a technique we have recently proposed to solve amplitude fading associated with the speckle statistics when the displacement to be covered is well in excess of the speckle longitudinal size. We implement the dynamical tracking of speckle maxima with piezo actuators and a phase-sensing loop. Also, we use an automatic gain control, based on a liquid crystal attenuator, to improve the amplitude statistics. Details of digital signal acquisition with adaptive signal processing through a field programmable gate array are discussed. The resulting instrument offers subm resolution in the measurement of displacement up to 500 mm of total shift, has virtually no need for alignment, and has very relaxed target-surface requisites, yet works with a very simple and inexpensive set-up.

APPLICATION OF SELF-MIXING INTERFEROMETRY FOR DEPTH MONITORING IN THE ABLATION OF TiN COATINGS

Among possible monitoring techniques, self-mixing interferometry stands out as an appealing option for online ablation depth measurements. The method uses a simple laser diode and interference is detected inside the diode cavity and measured as the optical power fluctuation by the photodiode encased in the laser diode itself. This way, self-mixing interferometry combines the advantages of a hig...

Embedded high resolution sensor based on optical feedback in Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser

This paper describes the fabrication of a novel type of pressure sensor based on optical feedback in a Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL). The detection mechanism of the sensor is based on a displacement measurement through self-mixing interferometry in the laser cavity. The use of unpackaged VCSELs enables the embedding in thin flexible optical foils which results in an integrated ...

A Birefringent-Refraction Transducer for Measuring Angular Displacement Based on Heterodyne Interferometry

In this paper, an optical angle sensor with a birefringent transducer for measuring angular displacement based on a heterodyne interferometry is proposed. The achievable repeatability and linearity provide sufficient evidence for the practical use. As a result, a resolution of 5.8 ˆ 10 ́6 with a dynamic range of 5 ̋ has been achieved by utilizing a KTP (potassium titanyl phosphate) plate immersed...

Improving the measurement performance for a self-mixing interferometry-based displacement sensing system.

Approaches that are, to our knowledge, novel, are proposed in this paper to improve the accuracy performance of self-mixing interferometry (SMI) for displacement measurement. First, the characteristics associated with signals observed in SMI systems are studied, based on which a new procedure is proposed for achieving accurate estimation of the laser phase. The studies also revealed the reasons...

Holographic insitu stress measurements

A new instrument for measuring the in siru level of stress in boreholes has been developed. The instrument operates on the principle of locally relieving the stresses acting on a rock mass by drilling a small hole into the borehole surface and recording the resultant displacement field by holographic interferometry. Because the recording technique is optical, the entire displacement field due t...
